Nestled in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, Port Allegany is a quaint town with tree lined streets. The headwaters of the Allegheny River is located 30 miles east in a small community called Gold, PA. The Allegheny River provided a means of transport through our community. History reveals that Port Allegany was a traveling point in pioneer days when travelers coming overland from the Susquehanna River would continue by boat Originally, known as Canoe Place, the town’s name was changed to Port Allegany in 1838. Lumber and tanning industries grew as a result of the river and then the railways. In the 1800’s natural gas was discovered which lead to the expansion of industries including glass firms, chemical plants, cheese factories, machine shops, brick plants, sawmills, planing mills, tanneries and furniture factories. Today, Port Allegany is best known for its glass manufacturing, Pittsburgh Corning Corporation which is the only producer of glass blocks in the United States and St. Gobain Containers LLC, which is a producer of glass containers.
